  • Steel Magnolias

Blue Ridge Community Theater 2591 East 1st St, Blue Ridge, Georgia, United States

STEEL MAGNOLIAS BY ROBERT HARLING MAIN STAGE PERFORMANCE DIRECTED BY SONIA SMITH Steel Magnolias is a funny, heartwarming, and deeply moving portrait of friendship, resilience, and Southern charm. Set in a small-town Louisiana beauty salon, the play follows six women whose lives interweave through laughter, gossip, love, and loss. From weddings to heartbreaks, their bond carries them through life’s joys and sorrows, proving that with strength, humor, and a touch of hairspray, anything is possible. Full of sharp wit and emotional depth, Steel Magnolias captures the power of friendship and the enduring spirit of women who support each other through thick and thin. Written by Robert Harling and first staged Off-Broadway in 1987, Steel Magnolias quickly became a beloved favorite, later inspiring the acclaimed 1989 film. • Jamey Johnson – The Last Honky Tonk Tour

Jamey Johnson, a ten-time GRAMMY nominee, has been called “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” by The Washington Post. His music has garnered international acclaim and is embraced by fans of classic and contemporary country, as well as Americana and mainstream rock. The Grand Ole Opry member is also widely regarded as one of the greatest country songwriters of his generation. He is one of only two people in the history of country music (along with Kris Kristofferson) to win two Song of the Year awards in the same year--for “Give It Away” and “In Color”--from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. A consummate storyteller, his songs have been recorded by George Strait, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, James Otto, Joe Nichols and others. He is “a first-rate preservationist of classic country songwriting…,” says The New York Times. His recent prime-time television performances have been widely recognized as the best of the shows, from singing “Georgia on My Mind” in the 2023 CBS special Willie Nelson's 90th Birthday Celebration and “Angels Among Us” for the 2024 CMT Giants: Alabama to performing “Beer for My Horses” in August with Lainey Wilson for the top-rated NBC special Toby Keith: American Icon (available to stream on Peacock), debuting his powerful song, “21 Guns,” during PBS' National Memorial Day Concert earlier this year, and delivering a standout performance of “Give It Away” at the 2024 CMA Awards. The Recording Industry Association of America recently honored him for sales/streams of 9 million, including the 5X platinum-certified single “In Color,” the 2X platinum-certified album That Lonesome Song, the platinum-certified single “High Cost of Living,” the gold-certified song “Between Jennings and Jones” and the gold-certified single “That Lonesome Song.” Johnson just completed his “What a View” headlining tour and is now part of the “Life is a Carnival: Last Waltz Tour '24,” the epic tour that continues the tradition of capturing the excitement of The Band's historic 1976 Thanksgiving concert in San Francisco. The tour also features Ryan Bingham, Lukas Nelson, Don Was and others. In October 2024, Jamey performed in “Life Is a Carnival: A Music Celebration of Robbie Robertson,” which was held in Los Angeles and filmed by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese for an upcoming release.

  • Centennial Sounds

Festival Barn 1 Folk School Rd

Music and dance have been a vital part of the Folk School since its founding in 1925. As we celebrate our 100th year, Centennial Sounds honors this legacy by spotlighting the cultural richness of Appalachian music and the many voices that shape it. This special performance series will feature five headliners whose work expands and redefines the story of Appalachian music. Through these concerts, we aim to create new opportunities for our community in Western North Carolina to experience the full spectrum of Appalachian sound. Admission is $25 for adults and $5 for youth. * Buy tickets online at folkschool.org/sounds Doors 6 p.m. Music 7 p.m. in the Festival Barn Tray Wellington Band Banjo player Tray Wellington’s approach to the quintessential American instrument is all about looking forward. An International Bluegrass Music Association Award winner, Wellington is critically acclaimed not only for his technical prowess, but also for leveraging his unique point of view to craft a one-of-a-kind voice on the instrument. It’s a feat that’s all too rare in these roots genres that seem to value emulation and regurgitation over all else. Instead, Wellington has time and time again reasserted that his playing style, and all of the many varied and disparate parts that combine within it, is wholly his own. Cherokee Language Repertory Choir Opening this special concert is the Cherokee Language Repertory Choir, a group dedicated to preserving and celebrating the Cherokee language through song and performance. This choir uses the Christian Harmony shaped note tradition, but instead of singing it traditionally, in English, they sing in Cherokee. This effort revives a documented tradition of shaped note singing in the Cherokee community while helping to keep the Cherokee language a part of cultural practice in Western North Carolina.

  • 53rd Annual Helen to Atlantic Hot Air Balloon Race

Downtown Helen 1074 Edelweiss Strausse, Helen, Georgia, United States

The South’s oldest balloon event and the United States’ only long distance hot air balloon race will begin (weather permitting) with a mass ascension of around 20 bright and colorful hot air balloons, in North Georgia’s Alpine Village – Helen. Race competitors and local flyers will take to the sky at 7:00 am, Thursday, June 4th, 2026. If the weather conditions are too windy or storms are forecast, the take off will be postponed until conditions are acceptable. The people of Helen believe that Helen, Georgia is the center of their world and in Columbus’ day the Atlantic Ocean was the “edge of the Earth”. Thus, Pete Hodkinson came up with the concept for the Helen to the Atlantic Balloon Race. The race begins in Helen and the finish line is I-95 (anywhere between Maine and Miami). The shortest distance is 225 miles and the race usually takes two days. It has been done in one day, while some races have taken as many as four days. Several balloons will be competing in the cross country race. It is a race where both the pilot’s and crew’s skills are challenged. A balloon can only go the same speed and direction as the wind. The pilot must find the altitude which gives him/her the best speed as well as direction towards the finish line. The race becomes a crew event as well, since the balloons are limited to 40 gallons of fuel (propane). Forty gallons is approximately enough fuel to last 4 hours, so the balloons have to land for refueling. If the crew is not there immediately with fresh tanks, valuable time is lost while the pilot and crew try to find each other. The winner is the first person to cross I-95, or whoever is ahead at sunset on Friday, June 5th, 2026. While the competition to the Atlantic continues, other balloonist compete in local events beginning Thursday evening around 6:00 pm. Local flying events will take place also on Friday and Saturday. The balloons will fly around 7:30 am and 6:00 pm each day (weather permitting). The balloons will only fly for around 1 to 2 hours. There will be many opportunities available to the public; assisting with the inflations, being a part of a chase crew or taking a tethered ride in a balloon. There will be approximately 20 balloons flying locally

Habersham Community Theater 1370 Washington Street

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach... and launches a journey of enormous proportions. Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach, among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James' quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family. Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, this musical has something the whole family will enjoy!
