Find out moreThe Sautee Nacoochee Center (SNC) is pleased to announce the opportunity for learning through interaction with historic interpreters. Traditions of the Appalachian Mountains will be alive at the Heritage Site, which is located on the 8.5 acre SNC campus. Framed by nineteenth century landscaping and antebellum artifacts, the Heritage Site features two structures that will be brought to life on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. A slave cabin original to the Nacoochee Valley and moved to the SNC campus, along with a blacksmith's shop built onsite in 2014, tell the region's history in many ways. On scheduled Heritage Days a docent will welcome visitors to the cabin, which provides a focal point for the story of the people whose labor contributed in many ways to life in Northeast Georgia. A demonstrating blacksmith will be at the smithy, which offers a window into the ways in which functional and decorative tools and implements were created in communities all across the region. The Heritage Site will be staffed and welcoming visitors on the second and fourth Saturdays from 10 AM until 4 PM as listed in the events calendar. All are invited to stop by to learn about nineteenth and early twentieth century life through demonstration and conversation.

Actor Bill Oberst, Jr. has stepped into the late Lewis Grizzard's shoes over 1,000 times in the last decade. Oberst's portrayal of the Southern writer and humorist is a one-man show authorized by Grizzard's family, which says it is the closest thing to seeing the late great spokesman of the south onstage again since Grizzard's death at age 47.Grizzard's widow Dedra still remembers the moment she first saw Bill Oberst, Jr. as her late husband. "When he looked down over those glasses and the audience laughed, it really was like seeing a ghost." she says. Yet Mrs. Grizzard was skeptical. A tribute show with an actor playing Mr. Grizzard had not been her idea, but hers was the final word. "After the show so many people came up and thanked me. So I decided that maybe we could do this in a way that honored Lewis's memory, which was the most important thing to me. I told Bill "Let's just try it and see what happens." Twelve hundred performances later, the show is still going strong.
