Founded in 1877, Alto (previously known as “Lulah City” and “Long View”) was incorporated on December 16, 1895. The community straddles Habersham and Banks counties. Originally, the small town was one square mile in size and 1,395 feet above sea level. It has a population of approximately 1,220 people. The community name derives from the Italian term for “high,” for its elevation.
