Located right on the Georgia and North Carolina border, Sky Valley is a small, rural town with a total land area of three square miles. Because it is nestled in a scenic mountain valley on the Northwest side of Rabun Bald, this town’s elevation is around 3,500 feet above sea level and is the highest city in Georgia.
The community of Sky Valley came into existence in the 1970s after a group of investors bought a 2,500 acre cattle ranch and developed the Sky Valley Resort for snow skiing. This attraction helped bring permanent settlers to the area, and it officially became a city in 1978. In 2004, the ski slopes were closed and Sky Valley became known as Sky Valley Resort and Country Club.
Now it hosts various recreational activities and areas such as a 12 acre lake, 18-hole championship golf course and membership benefits. In addition to the resort, residents enjoy a variety of gorgeous mountain vistas, waterfalls and hiking trails.
