Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia, the city of Ellijay began as a lumber center. Logging led to the arrival of the railroad in 1834, and farmers adopted apple farming in the early 1900s. Today, Ellijay is known as the “Apple Capital of Georgia,” boasting many well-known apple orchards that provide over 600,000 bushels of delicious apples each year.
Today, nature enthusiasts can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding mountains, kayak the rapids of the Cartecay Rivers, fish and boat on Carter’s Lake and mountain bike on over a hundred miles of single-track mountain biking trails.
Ellijay is a true “Main Street” community where you’ll find the town square beautifully accented with brick-lined sidewalks and a roundabout traffic circle by the courthouse. Quaint shops fill the downtown with antiques, outfitter stores, art galleries and unique restaurants. Whether you enjoy wine tasting at Cartecay or Engelheim Vineyards, visit animal farms and rescue centers, or walk through the Civil War Museum, Ellijay will provide a unique and fun mountain experience.
