Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof is the brainchild of Broadway legends, Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince; songwriters, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; and bookwriter, Joseph Stein. Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth, and honesty, this universal show is a staple of the musical theatre canon. Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy, and sadness.

Jamey Johnson, a ten-time GRAMMY nominee, has been called “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” by The Washington Post. His music has garnered international acclaim and is embraced by fans of classic and contemporary country, as well as Americana and mainstream rock. The Grand Ole Opry member is also widely regarded as one of the greatest country songwriters of his generation. He is one of only two people in the history of country music (along with Kris Kristofferson) to win two Song of the Year awards in the same year--for “Give It Away” and “In Color”--from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. A consummate storyteller, his songs have been recorded by George Strait, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, James Otto, Joe Nichols and others. He is “a first-rate preservationist of classic country songwriting…,” says The New York Times. His recent prime-time television performances have been widely recognized as the best of the shows, from singing “Georgia on My Mind” in the 2023 CBS special Willie Nelson's 90th Birthday Celebration and “Angels Among Us” for the 2024 CMT Giants: Alabama to performing “Beer for My Horses” in August with Lainey Wilson for the top-rated NBC special Toby Keith: American Icon (available to stream on Peacock), debuting his powerful song, “21 Guns,” during PBS' National Memorial Day Concert earlier this year, and delivering a standout performance of “Give It Away” at the 2024 CMA Awards. The Recording Industry Association of America recently honored him for sales/streams of 9 million, including the 5X platinum-certified single “In Color,” the 2X platinum-certified album That Lonesome Song, the platinum-certified single “High Cost of Living,” the gold-certified song “Between Jennings and Jones” and the gold-certified single “That Lonesome Song.” Johnson just completed his “What a View” headlining tour and is now part of the “Life is a Carnival: Last Waltz Tour '24,” the epic tour that continues the tradition of capturing the excitement of The Band's historic 1976 Thanksgiving concert in San Francisco. The tour also features Ryan Bingham, Lukas Nelson, Don Was and others. In October 2024, Jamey performed in “Life Is a Carnival: A Music Celebration of Robbie Robertson,” which was held in Los Angeles and filmed by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese for an upcoming release.

Other genres such as trad squares, balfolk, swing, two-step, line dance, and waltz are occasionally featured as well. A donation of $10-20 per adult is suggested for our bigger weekend dances, but all are welcome regardless of contribution. Lineup and schedule are subject to change. We hope to see you soon!

Music and dance have been a vital part of the Folk School since its founding in 1925. As we celebrate our 100th year, Centennial Sounds honors this legacy by spotlighting the cultural richness of Appalachian music and the many voices that shape it. This special performance series will feature five headliners whose work expands and redefines the story of Appalachian music. Through these concerts, we aim to create new opportunities for our community in Western North Carolina to experience the full spectrum of Appalachian sound. Admission is $25 for adults and $5 for youth. * Buy tickets online at folkschool.org/sounds Doors 6 p.m. Music 7 p.m. in the Festival Barn Tray Wellington Band Banjo player Tray Wellington’s approach to the quintessential American instrument is all about looking forward. An International Bluegrass Music Association Award winner, Wellington is critically acclaimed not only for his technical prowess, but also for leveraging his unique point of view to craft a one-of-a-kind voice on the instrument. It’s a feat that’s all too rare in these roots genres that seem to value emulation and regurgitation over all else. Instead, Wellington has time and time again reasserted that his playing style, and all of the many varied and disparate parts that combine within it, is wholly his own. Cherokee Language Repertory Choir Opening this special concert is the Cherokee Language Repertory Choir, a group dedicated to preserving and celebrating the Cherokee language through song and performance. This choir uses the Christian Harmony shaped note tradition, but instead of singing it traditionally, in English, they sing in Cherokee. This effort revives a documented tradition of shaped note singing in the Cherokee community while helping to keep the Cherokee language a part of cultural practice in Western North Carolina.

Bad Moon Rising, a Classic Tributes Live band, invites you to take a trip down the Mississippi delta as they pay tribute to arguably the greatest rock band North America ever produced. Creedence Clearwater Revival. CCR was an American Roots rock band who’s sound incorporated southern, country and blues rock. The resulting sound and success (built on the distinctive vocals, wailing guitar and song writing style of John Fogerty) became known as swamp rock, and CCR was the pioneer of the genre. CCR was prolific during a 4-year period between 1969 and 1971. This period produced fourteen consecutive top 10 singles and five consecutive top 10 albums including two that reached number one. Bad Moon Rising will take you from the band’s headlining of the 1969 Woodstock Festival to their acrimonious disbandment in 1972 and beyond. Let’s travel with the band up around the bend and run through the jungle into the bayou and home to Green River where we can look out the backdoor, down on the corner and see the rain. Hey tonight we’ll all be the fortunate ones and proud as Mary. Ladies and gentleman BAD MOON RISING!!!

From A Boy Named Sue to Ring of Fire to Rusty Cage, Johnny Folsom 4 is the ultimate tribute to the legendary Man in Black. While nobody really sounds like Johnny Cash, nobody sounds more like Johnny Cash than Johnny Folsom 4. Lead singer David Burney’s lilting southern baritone delivers Cash’s classic songs so well you may well wonder from time to time if Johnny himself is in the building. David Gresham fills the shoes of Luther and Carl Perkins on those classic guitar licks, while Randy Benefield (drums) and Steve Eisenstadt (bass) provide that hallmark, train-like rhythm the whole world knows and loves. No Depression Magazine says “For those of us unable to have seen Cash perform during his life, this is more than a treat. It’s a time machine.” When it comes to honoring Johnny Cash, JF4 walks the line.” Adult: $44.50 – Senior 65+/Military/Public Service: $40.50 – High School & College Students (ID) – $34.50 – 12 & Under: $10.50
