The Appalachian Mountains combines history and mountain culture for a growing community in North Georgia. Union County has the energy of contemporary life combined with a tradition of festivals, vibrant music, and scenic attractions for recreational activities year round.

Union County was carved from Cherokee County during the Georgia Land Lottery of 1832 in which many Scotch-Irish mountain people settled. John Thomas, a prominent Union County resident and politician suggested the name Union, as many southerners were pro-Union. Blairsville, the county seat was incorporated in 1835 and was named for Frank (Francis Preston) “Blair”, who was a Washington, D.C. newspaper editor. That same year, the first Union County courthouse was constructed in the center of town.

Growth was slow in the early days although Union County shared a small extent of the Gold Rush during that time in Gum Log, Ivy Log, High Tower, Brasstown, and Coosa. Roads and bridges opened the area in 1840, when a toll road (Union Turnpike) was built across Tesnatee Gap to connect Blairsville with Gainesville, Ga., by way of Cleveland. In 1841 Major Francis Logan bought the rights to run the toll road and built a home, a lodge, and the tollgate. In 1871 he purchased additional land in Union County and it became known as the Logan Turnpike and was operated by his family until work was completed across Neel’s Gap in 1922.

Mountain Life Museum

History still abounds in downtown Blairsville as visitor’s can see the Mountain Life Museum, which replicates life in the early days. After the courthouse burned in 1898 a new courthouse, would serve the county until 1976, when a new structure was built nearby. The old courthouse was donated to the Union County Historical Society, which is open to the public as a museum. Artifacts and photos show mountain life during this era.

During the early 1900’s, the United States purchased large amounts of land in the county and consolidated the land into the Georgia National Forest. Arthur Woody, a Union County resident, became the forest’s first ranger. In 1937 the holdings were renamed to the Chattahoochee National Forest. Today tourism is a major industry in the county, in part due to the National Forest and the creation of Lake Nottely in the late 1940’s.

Lake Nottely

Recreational areas draw thousands of visitors each year to enjoy golf, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, as well as fishing and watersports on two lakes: Winfield Scott, in Suches and Nottely in Blairsville. Winfield Scott is an 18-acre lake that is on the headwater of Cooper Creek, which winds from the lake to the Toccoa River. This beautiful setting features campsites, fishing, hiking, wildlife, and is accessible via State Road 180. Lake Nottely Reservoir, a 4,180-acre lake serves a number of purposes other than recreation, including flood damage reduction and hydroelectric power generation. The TVA 184 ft. dam stretches 2,300 ft. across the Nottely River and has a flood storage capacity of 100,000 acre-feet. The reservoir features a beach, camping area and is a popular place for viewing wildlife. Marina’s provide fishing supplies, and seasonal boating & jet ski rentals to help you enjoy this beautiful scenic mountain paradise.

The Chattahoochee National Forest in Union County covers more than 98,000 acres. Adventurers can explore eight wonderful waterfalls, including Vogel State Park just south of town, as well as petroglyphs left by ancient natives in the soapstone at Trackrock Archeological Area, just east of Blairsville.
Walasi Yi Center; Cherokee for “Frog Town” is located at the top of Blood Mountain and is the only place where the 2,175-mile-long Appalachian Trail passes through a man-made stone structure, built in 1937. Visitors will relish the ever-changing panorama of this breathtaking scenery.

Byron Herbert Reece Barn

Agriculture in Union County has helped continue a growing industry and is the home of Georgia Mountain Research & Education Center. The Experimental station covers 415 acres of orchards, test plots, pasture land, and gardens. Families may include the Southern Tree Plantation during fall and Christmas season to offer fun activities, such as hayrides, farm animals, wooden maze, pony and train rides for kids.

Families love festivals, and Union County host many throughout the year. Two favorites are the Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games each June, plus the annual fall Sorghum Festival, that not only showcases the traditional Sorghum syrup, but also local arts and crafts. Visitors may join in the “Biskit Eatin”, “Log Sawin, or Rock Throwin contests, designed to foster awareness of local culture and have some fun.

There are plenty of reasons to explore Blairsville, Georgia and our surrounding area to enjoy a colorful Spring, a verdant green Summer, a blazing rich Autumn or a white Christmas. Each season, come discover something new: “Come discover “U” in Union County!”

Just 90 miles northeast of Atlanta, visitors will experience a high quality of natural environment with the surrounding countryside. Cleveland is a “Breath of Fresh Air”, where spring blooms pleasant temperatures to enjoy the flora and fauna that abound the area’s recreational State Parks.

Cleveland was initially established as Mount Yonah, a small rural village, which existed as early as 1830. Yonah is the Cherokee word for “Bear” and the mountain was considered to be a spiritual and sacred power point to the Native Americans. Mt. Yonah is 3,166 ft. in elevation and the top of the cliffs of this granite monolith were once used as a ceremonial site. Just off Hwy. 75 north of Cleveland, visitors traveling by Mt. Yonah will be austounded by it’s grandeur.

Cleveland’s courthouse was built in 1857 near the town of Mount Yonah where a village square intersected Clarkesville-Dahlonega and Gainesville-Nacoochee roads. The courthouse is now the home of the White County Historical Society Museum. Inside you’ll find displays about the county’s contributions to the Civil War and World War II, as well as Native American history.

The area first developed as a small agricultural community of various farming bases. Cattle, hogs and chickens, as well as vegetables, were sold in Cleveland markets and throughout the county. The town was incorporated in 1870 and named after General Benjamin Cleveland, a war figure from 1812. Benjamin was not only a General in the Militia, but represented Habersham for over 20 years in the Legislature. He was a member of the Whig Party and in 1848 candidate for Representative in Congress. By trade Benjamin was a carpenter, bought land at the foot of Currahee Mountain and became a merchant in Clarkesville with his son-in-law and partner Thomas J. Rusk. General Benjamin Cleveland was a man of large means and gave much to charity as he was noted for his kindness in times of scarcity.

The center of North Georgia’s 18th century folk pottery cottage industry was located in this area, and there are several places in Cleveland you can buy genuine pottery pieces, as well as other locally-made art. Gold was found in the late 1820’s on the Nacoochee River, now known as Duke’s Creek, starting the Gold Rush in surrounding areas of the Southeast. Visitor’s can relive a part of that history, by panning for gold just outside of Cleveland in nearby locations.

When introduction of electricity came to rural Georgia in the 1930’s and 1940’s, Cleveland saw a marked increase in the growth of business. Today, Cleveland has become the commercial, industrial and business hub, of White County, while still maintaining contact with earlier times. Thriving industry such as Freudenberg-NOK a large sealing product manufacturer, Cobb-Vantress, a leading supplier in the poultry industry and Truett McConnell College have all helped benefit the community to what it is today.

Cleveland is also the home of the Cabbage Patch Kids® and Babyland General Hospital. This is where Xavier Roberts created the first soft-sculpture babies that started worldwide history. Influenced by his mother, Xavier experimented with quilted dolls; forming a doll he called “Little People”. Traveling from state to state in various folk art exhibitions, he began selling the handcrafted dolls he called “babies”. He started manufacturing the dolls in his hometown of Cleveland, at a converted medical clinic, which evolved into Babyland General® Hospital. By 1982 the Cabbage Patch Kids, became a major toy fad spreading worldwide.

Today, the facility is located in a new 70,000 sq. ft. building on 96 acres with a historical archive of 115 million Cabbage Patch Kids and their adoptive parents. Admission is Free to this major attraction for families to experience the birth, care, and adoption process of the Cabbage Patch Kids. Visitors may also enjoy the annual Easter Eggstravaganza and the Appalachian Christmas celebrations.

Cleveland is a friendly, bustling little town that makes a great base from which to plan your vacation. Experience the small town feel as you make the traditional circle of the courthouse square. Browse through antique stores, art galleries, gift shops, and old-time drug stores with soda fountain. Shop to get your sporting and camping supplies, as there are many beautiful waterfalls in the area that can be visited with a short hike.

Many restaurants in downtown help you experience the flavor of “Good Country Style Home Cooking” with local fresh ingredients. The Cleveland Downtown area is also host to Christmas in the Mountains, which includes a lighted Christmas Parade and the Agri-Fest Country Market.

The city of Cleveland has a population of approximately 2,000 citizens but serves a larger area of about 1,200 square miles. To the East is Nacoochee Valley, base area of Mt. Yonah, and Mossy Creek, home of the future Buck Shoals State Park. Testnatee Gap in the western area also provides several scenic camping facilities for travelers.

Recreational opportunities abound in these surrounding areas, with small lakes, rivers, and trout streams to fish. Hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, wildlife observations, and golfing are just minutes away from Cleveland. Our friendly atmosphere invites you to come and enjoy your stay in Cleveland, Georgia – where “Your Gateway to The Good Life Begins”!

Although to really enjoy the peaceful serenity and magnificent wonders of nature is to take a trip to the mountains in winter. These sleepy small mountain towns allow visitors to relax, renew, and offer a variety of activities. Enjoying the holidays isn’t just about twinkling lights, however; this is a great time of year to enjoy the southern hospitality of the mountains away from the crowds. You will find more personalized attention and amenities ranging in lodging, recreation, shopping, and dining in North Georgia for a memorable vacation.

Warm yourself by a cozy fire in the indoor fireplace or the riverfront outdoor chiminea. Enjoy walks along the banks of the river and view wildlife like deer, groundhogs, Canadian Geese, and also an occasional winter visitor of the bald eagle. Hiking trails provide magnificent long range views of mountains, that your unable to see when foliage is in bloom spring through fall. If you enjoy the outdoors, most activities are open year round, including golf, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, picnicking, birding, geocaching, nature photography, and wildlife environmental education. Some winter outdoor fun also includes snow tubing, sledding, ice skating, and holiday parades. If you like the coziness of indoors you’ll be sure to find a variety of activities to enjoy the day. Downtown has quaint cafés and shops that include art galleries, antique stores, pottery, handmade furniture and crafts. Wintertime is always a great time for sales in clothing, gift shops, and where you will find that most stores have reasonable prices. Wine tasting is also popular where visitors can enjoy views at the wineries from the covered balcony, deck, or inside by the fire. Special winery dinners and events at premises or nearby facilities allow visitors to relax while enjoying a wonderful meal. Menus range from slow-roasted meats, fish, vegetables, soups, salads, and cheeses. Transportation is also available for winery tours.
Experience staying in a rustic cabin and spend a cozy romantic evening in the North Georgia Mountains cuddling by the crackling fire. You can also lodge in a hotel that has a variety of amenities including fireplaces, hot tubs and kitchenette area. Many facilities have packages to pamper you at spas with facials, massages, saunas and fitness center. Nightlife is found in downtown areas of the larger towns and offers community theater shows and music performers. Restaurants, pubs, and small cafés have good food with a small town atmosphere. Mom-and-Pop operations serve hot sandwiches, soup, and country cooking that warms you up on cold winter days.

If you are lucky, you may experience the pristine beauty of snow in the North Georgia Mountains. Although the snow will not last very long, you will be treated to a sparkling winter wonderland– even if it is temporary.
Temperatures during winter months are usually variable. Oftentimes, stretches of relatively mild weather will alternate with cold snaps. Winter highs are in the 40’s & 50’s with below freezing temperatures overnight on an average of 3 months of the year. Snow may blanket the mountains about once or twice a year from light dustings up to 3 or more inches in higher elevations. The peace of waking up to find the ground covered by a thick, white blanket will bring a smile as you enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate and a roaring fire. It is so serene; it seems to be in hibernation, quietly conserving its reserves for the coming spring.
North Georgia’s wonderland of beauty always manages to retain its charm and attraction for all seasons. Come experience… a special vacation in the Mountains and treat yourself to quiet comfort.

It was situated near the old boundary lines between the Cherokee and Creek Indian tribes that had beautiful virgin forestland.

As transportation was building along the East Coast, there was a settlement at the junction of railroads that was known as Tom Paine’s Post Office. Mr. Henry Smith, a judge, who was the attorney for the Blue Ridge Railroad had the junction of the two railroads moved to form blocks and subdivided building lots that helped sell lots to form the central business district of Cornelia.

Blaine Station was the original name of the railroad depot and was named for the Republican presidential candidate James Gillespie Blaine. When the attorney representing the railroad, Pope Barrow, secured the first charter of the town in 1887 the name was changed to Cornelia in honor of his wife.

Visitors can step back in time to downtown Cornelia and see the beautifully restored Train Depot as the original terminal was damaged in a fire, and rebuilt in 1914 to it’s current appearance. Inside the terminal is a museum of early railroad memorabilia, model of the Talullah Falls train, and two restored cabooses by the depot.

The “Big Red Apple,” stands near the train depot as a monument that is seven feet tall, 22 ft. in circumference and weighs 5200 lbs. It was shipped from Virginia in 1926 to celebrate the apple industry. The monument was donated by the Southern Railway, and for many years a festival was held in celebration of the apples grown in the area. Cornelia has since been known as the “The Home of the Big Red Apple.

Several sites throughout Cornelia lure history buffs to discover some old time architecture like the Loudermilk Boarding House on Foreacre St. Built in 1908 and listed on The National Register of Historic Places features Joni Mabe’s Panoramic Encyclopedia of Everything Elvis. The Elvis Museum contains over 30,000 Elvis items and is listed in Guinness’ World Book of Records for being the most unique. There is also a Big E Festival held first Saturday in August for Elvis fans.

The Habersham County Historical Society and Telephone Museum is on North Main Street. The building houses an extensive collection of telephone equipment and information as well as historical maps of the county and surrounding areas. The telephone equipment is from Standard Telephone and encompasses the years 1876 to present. One of the special items is a telephone receiver that was patented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.

The Community House on Wyly Street is a handsome stone & log structure built by the CCC in 1936 and listed on the National Register. Also on the property is the Hilliard Wilbanks memorial honoring Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Captain Hilliard A Wilbanks. The adjoining park features picnic areas, playground equipment and walking trails.

The Chenocetah Fire Tower is the last rock-constructed, working fire lookout tower in the east and has been preserved through a cooperative effort between The U.S. Forestry and citizens groups. Built by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in 1936 for the Chattahoochee National Forest, the stone tower is 40 feet high and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tower is open to visitors one day a year during the “Big Red Apple Festival.” The city of Cornelia provides hayrides to the tower during daylight hours. Guests may climb to the top for the tower for a spectacular panoramic view of horizons.

Cornelia is also adjacent to the Lake Russell Recreational Area in the Chattahoochee National Forest. It has hiking trails available year-round and a 4.6 mile loop that goes around the shore of this beautiful 100 acre lake. The Ladyslipper Trail is a nice 6.2 mile hike that loops through the forest behind Nancytown Lake. The Sourwood Trail is a 2.7 mile loop trail which features a nice little “Nancytown Waterfalls” at the 1.5 mile mark. Lake Russell has a large grass-covered beach and swimming area plus; easy access to camping, picnicking, hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, and non-motorized boating.

Today, Cornelia is a pleasant, picturesque small town at the gateway to the North Georgia Mountains. Stroll through the downtown area with shops, restaurants that uphold the small town atmosphere that takes pride in the community by preserving history and natural resources.
